Jordaan rumoured to be NMBM new mayor

South African Football Association (SAFA) CEO, Danny Jordaan, has reportedly been earmarked to take-over from Benson Fihla as the new Executive Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

According to a report by the Mail & Guardian, three senior party officials have confirmed that Jordaan’s name was frequently mentioned during an emergency meeting of the party’s executive in Port Elizabeth this week, as support for the ruling African National Congress (ANC) in the Metro, most notably in rural areas, continues to fall.

“His name has been raised but we are [not] yet [ready] to approach him. It’s still a discussion,” one executive member told the paper.

The article further stats that some regional and provincial members have expressed dissatisfaction at Fihla’s running of the Metro, believing that the 83-year old’s age makes him unable to properly engage with communities, and that Jordaan would be the ideal replacement.

Other noted candidates for the new mayoral committee include former Deputy Mayor, Bix Ndoni, Mayoral Committee Member, Mtwabo Ndude, and former ANC Youth League Leader, Andile Lungisa.
