July new vehicle sales lowest of the year so far

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) has recorded its biggest decline in new vehicle sales for July although exports continued to rise.

Aggregate total domestic sales were down 6.1% to 54 112 units from the 57 636 recorded over the same period last year. Individual segments continued to show mix results with the sales of passenger vehicles falling 8.8% from last year’s 40 015 units to 36 506, while light commercial vehicles posed a marginal gain of 0.7% from 14 979 to 15 090.

Further declines were also posted in the market for medium and heavy duty commercial vehicles with the former down 1.6% and the latter 6.3%. Exports continued to post gains with an increase of 24.4% from 28 291 to 22 736 units.
