June new vehicles plummet as exports rise

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) has recorded a significant decline in the sales of new vehicles for June with exports posting yet more gains.

Aggregate total domestic sales posted a drop of 4.8% to settle at 50 521 units compared to 52 785 form the same time in 2014. Individual segment showed mixed results with the sales of passenger vehicles falling 6.6% from last year’s 35 367 units to 33 035, while light commercial vehicles went up 1.5% from 14 533 to 14 756 units.

In comparison, the market for medium and heavy duty commercial vehicles posted severe drops of 11.4% and 16.3% respectively. Exports continued to shine with an increase of 33.8% from 2014’s 23 492 to 31 442 units this year.
