Junior Boks captain suspended

JUNE 23, 2016

Former Grey High representative and current Springbok U20 captain, Jeremy Ward, has been suspended and will miss the bronze medal play-off against Argentina on Saturday.

On Wednesday, Ward was handed a two-week suspension for a dangerous tip-tackle committed in the semi-final of the World Rugby U20 Championship against England on Monday.

Ward received a yellow card for the offense in the 15th minute of the clash and had to appear before a disciplinary committee on Wednesday night.

“The independent judicial officer, Mike Hamlin, ruled that the act of foul play was a breach of law 10.4(i) (tackling a player in the air) and imposed a low-end entry point sanction of three weeks,” Saru said in a statement.

The sanction, however, was reduced to two weeks after accounts of his exemplary disciplinary record was mitigated.

The suspension will remain in place until July 3rd, 2016.
