Justice at last: King Williams Town man sentenced to life for raping nine year-old

Officers from the King Williams Town Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit were recently commended after the Bhisho High Court convicted and sentenced Nkosinathi Malunga (31) to life imprisonment for sexually assaulting a nine year-old girl at  Ndlovini Extension, in Ndevana outside King Williams Town, between 2013 and August 2015.

According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant Siphokazi Mawisa; "Thorough police investigations led to the arrest of the suspect immediately after the police were alerted about the rape.

"He was arrested on the 12 August 2015 and he first appeared at Zwelitsha Magistrate's Court on the 14th August 2015. The investigating officer successfully got the court to deny him bail and he was remanded in custody."

Malunga appeared several times at the Court and on the 30th November 2015, the case was transferred to Bhisho High Court.

"His first appearance at High Court was on the 07th December 2015 for trial and after that he appeared several times.

"On 22 March 2016, he was found guilty of Rape," said Lt Mawisa.

Malunga was sentenced at High Court to undergo a life imprisonment on the 24th of March.

The Unit Commander of King Williams Town Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Major Sandile Mahobe has welcome the sentence and hope it will serve as a deterrent to perpetrators of crime. He commended a sterling work done by the Investigating Officer that led to the conviction and sentencing of the accused.

"The suspect was sentenced within seven months and this shows a good job done by Detectives on investigating this case,"  he added.
