BY SUPPLIED - NOVEMBER 30, 2015

Outeniqua Park will be a hype of activity this coming Saturday the 5th of December when the second edition of the George Mayoral Cup 7’s will kick-off the holiday season in fine style.

Followed by the George Lights Festival and switching on of the lights happening that same evening, the two events will combine to shift Georgians into holiday gear for what is to be a busy festive season as we welcome visitors from all over the country to our beautiful city.

The public is invited to attend both events within walking distance from each other that will be linked via CJ Langenhoven Rd. The Sevens will conclude at 5pm after which the festivities will move to Unity Park at the top of York St.

At the stadium, competition between the 16 participating rugby teams will be fierce as the battle it out for the prestigious Mayoral Cup that will be handed over by Alderman Charles Standers to the winning team.

Teams have put in a lot of training and must be super fit to keep up the tempo as the day and knock-out matches’ progress and rest time become a luxury. They will rely on an energized crowd and passionate supporters to carry them through to the final matches.

The partnership between the George Municipality, SWD Rugby Union and George Business Chamber is making the event possible and shows great cohesion between local - government, sport and business. As a result 14 of the 16 team sponsors have been confirmed at the time of going to print. They are Assupol, Go Gig, Garden Route Mall, Ten Entrepreneur Navigator, PG Bison, Safari Braai, Jetline, Mountview Resort, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s, RSK, SMEC, Suiderkruis Sekuriteit, GO GEORGE and Intrust Risk Mitigators.

Summer is in the air and the festivities at Outeniqua Park will also include singers, MC, brass band, Arnie the mascot, food stalls and a kids area all for only R20 for adults and kids under 18 enter for free. Don’t miss this experience and make it a great day out by using the Go George bus service to get around. Both the semi-finals and the final will be broadcast live on Eden Fm for those that cannot attend.
