Knysna Herons Guesthouse, a superb place in Knysna

It was my girlfriend’s birthday recently and I wanted to spoil her with something extra special. Being in the travel industry and knowing all the great places on offer in the Eastern Cape and Garden Route, I planned a surprise weekend getaway for the two of us.

We live in Port Elizabeth, and not wanting to travel somewhere too far from home, I chose to explore the beautiful Garden Route with the 3 Star Knysna Herons Guesthouse, situated within walking distance from the famous Knysna Lagoon, as our place to stay.

The three hour journey, through the forested Tsitsikamma and beautiful Plettenberg Bay, is amazing.

We were received at Knysna Herons Guesthouse by Quintin, one of the managers, who, from the moment we arrived, went out of his way to ensure that we were comfortable during our stay. He recommended a number of popular attractions in the area that could be enjoyed at this time of year.

I must say we were both impressed by our room as it exceeded our expectations. The “Hoopoe Room”, which is one of the guest houses deluxe rooms, had all manner of conveniences including coffee and tea making facilities, an air-conditioner, DSTV and a mini-fridge and the en-suite bathroom sparkled.

Eager to see what else the guesthouse offered, we stepped onto our deck, which had an amazing view of their beautiful garden and the sparkling swimming pool. With the door open to let in the fresh air, we took some time to recuperate from our drive while deciding on how to tackle the weekend.

As the sun set, we headed out for dinner at one of the many fine eateries found in Knysna, and one which Quintin had recommended. We also explored the town’s nightlife and found Knysna, despite being a small town and major tourist destination, to be vibrant even out of tourist season. We returned to the guesthouse late and happy, and slept like one should on holiday.

The next morning we were up early so that we could enjoy a full day of fun.  Breakfast at the guest house was awesome and we ensured that we were well nourished for the busy day ahead.  The side boards had everything from cereal, fresh fruit juices, fruit salad, coffee to yoghurt and the customary English fry-up of bacon and eggs could be ordered too. We devoured every delicious bite. Yum!

After breakfast, it was time to be active and Knysna has so much to offer! Several hours and photos later, we returned to the guesthouse where we spent the rest of the day cooling off at the pool.

Knysna Herons Guesthouse is the perfect place for a family or romantic getaway, and I can highly recommend it to anyone visiting the Garden Route.
