Koeberg Unit 2 shuts down for maintenance

Power utility Eskom has confirmed the shutting down of Unit 2 at its Koeberg Nuclear Plant from Monday evening.

In a statement, the state-owned parastatal indicated that the shutdown forms part of its scheduled maintenance programme, in which two units are taken offline every 14 to 18 months. The repairs are expected to last till mid-December.

“The routine shutdowns are scheduled so as to avoid having both units out of service at the same time and to avoid the winter months in each year,” Eskom said in a statement.

It also confirmed that Koeberg Unit 1 would continue unaffected while Unit 6 of the much troubled Medupi Power Station, which came online last week, would be used to lessen the impact of load shedding.
