KUDU KUDOS: Walk on the wild side at Kudu Ridge Game Lodge
After a mere 45-minute drive from the bustle of Port Elizabeth, we arrived at Kudu Ridge Game Lodge, which is comfortably-nestled in the warm, malaria-free Addo Hills Game Reserve. It didn’t take us long to feel at one with the African bush and the friendly smiles of the Lodge staff who greeted us and politely ushered us to our safari-styled tent made us feel at home.
Our accommodation exceeded my expectations. Surrounded by thick bush, each unit was modestly decorated with African-style wooden furniture adding to the bush experience. The en-suite bathroom was basic, rustic but clean and the ceiling fans in the rooms would provide comfort during the hot summer months.
As the sun began to set over the mountains, we were whisked off on an evening game drive. There was lot’s to see and learn from our knowledgeable guides. Kudu Ridge Game Ranch is renowned for its abundance of kudu, impala, bushbuck, grey duiker, Cape grysbok, porcupine, bush pig, warthog, rock dassie, caracal, meercats and a variety of birds. The Sundays River is not far away and I was delighted to hear the call of the African fish eagle while reclining in my hammock. Don’t forget to pack your camera!
Evenings at Kudu Ridge, which is owned and run by the hospitable Bowren family, are spent around a crackling fire, under a starry night-sky, in good company with other guests. We enjoyed a sumptuous meal and shared stories while a concerto of African bush sounds played in the background.
Talking about delectable meals, I found the Kudu Ridge menu a perfect complement to their African safari experience. It includes braais, potjies and other South African favourites. Vegetarians will be kept happy too with a large variety of locally grown vegetables.
Needless to say, the next morning, we woke up fully refreshed; had a warm, home-cooked ‘bush’ breakfast and, sadly, also had to say our goodbyes.
Brian and Jenny, our hosts, provided us with an unforgettable experience. They went above and beyond to ensure we were happy, comfortable and well fed. Their staff were courteous and helpful and the pricing reasonable.
Kudu Ridge Game Lodge is the perfect destination for anyone looking for an impromptu romantic safari breakaway, a corporate escape or to mark a special occasion in a bush setting. I will be returning there for a longer stay as soon as I get an opportunity!
