Local athlete defends Ironman title

Matt Trauman, a local athlete, has won two consecutive Ironman titles after winning the Ironman, held in East London, on Sunday.

An elated Trauman spoke to SABC news regarding his title defence.

“I feel it’s fantastic to defend my tittle and I had an amazing day. It’s fantastic to see the that the top four has been taken by South Africans and it’s great for South Africa to out run strong fielders in the IRONMAN 70.3,” said Trauman.

Annah Watkinson, top South African female athlete, took third spot in the female Ironman, while British athlete, Jodie Swallow, took first place. Swallow positioned 10th in the overall standings, while Watkinson positioned 27th.

Over 2 000 athletes participated in the event, which involves a 1.9 kilometre swim, 90 kilometres cycle and a 21 kilometres run.
