Lucky escape for Jbay men as boat overturns

Two men from Jeffrey’s Bay were brought safely back to shore after their boat capsized near Main Beach on Monday.

In a statement, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Jeffrey’s Bay station commander, Rieghard Janse Van Rensburg, said eyewitnesses noticed the overturned vessel just after 17h30 and alerted rescuers.

He said both men were scooped up from the ocean and taken aboard the NSRI’s rescue craft, where the captain was treated for shock and his crewman for a laceration to his leg. The latter was subsequently taken hospital once back ashore.

According to Janse Van Rensburg, engine failure allegedly could have been the main reason for the boat veering off-course and getting struck by a wave. The vessel was eventually righted and towed back to shore.
