Madonsela called to investigate alleged financial irregularities at WCape school

SEPTEMBER 15, 2015

A councillor with the Hessequa Local Municipality in the Western Cape has reportedly called on the provincial Department of Education, as well as the office of Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, to investigate allegations of financial mismanagement at a high school in Albertinia.

According to the local South Cape Forum, Councillor Fred Carelse stated that overspending had been taking place since 2011, and that school, which he claimed was trying to hide the matter, had been making use of a fixed deposit account without the knowledge or consent from parents.

Carelse, who was appointed by the school’s governing body in February to serve on its financial committee, added that around R200 000 from the account was proposed for the 2013 budget, while two amounts totalling R100 000 each was approved for the 2014 and 2015 budgets.

No comment from the Department or Madonsela’s office has yet been made.
