Maimane to visit Fort Hare over threats against student division

BY CHARL BOSCH - OCTOBER 1, 2015

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane is expected to visit the University of Fort Hare’s Alice campus later today, following a call from the party’s youth division to suspend register Mike Sonmiso.

In a statement earlier this week, DA Youth Chairperson, Yusuf Cassim, said Sonmiso was captured in a recording telling a fellow administrator that uMkhonto weSizwe military veterans were planning an attack on members of the Democratic Alliance Students Organisation (DASO), adding that the revelation was evident of a collusion between management, the ruling African National Congress and its student division, SASCO.

DASO caused an upset in March this year by winning the university’s Student Representative Council (SRC) elections in a 52% versus 37% vote, at an institution that has delivered a high number of former and current ANC politicians.

Maimane, who will be accompanied by party provincial leader Athol Trollip, is expected to meet with university Vice-Chancellor, Dr Mvuyo Tom, to discuss the allegations.
