The Board of Directors of Cricket Eastern Cape (Pty) Ltd have announced the appointment of Malibongwe Maketa as Head Coach of the Eastern Cape Franchise, the Warriors.

Mali, as he is known, took over as caretaker coach when Piet Botha stepped down in December.  A comprehensive recruitment process was put in place in January and the HR & Remco Committee headed by Dr Gary Paul conducted interviews earlier this month.

"We embarked upon a very rigorous recruitment and selection process in our efforts to fill this crucial position. It is really great that Malibongwe emerged as the best candidate from this process. The specially-constituted Appointment Committee agreed that Mali is the person to take the Warriors forward. His appointment provides a seamless transition as he has been performing the Head Coach role on an interim basis in addition to having been the Assistant Coach for a two year period." said Dr Paul.

Maketa who was born and bred in the Eastern Cape attended Dale College.  He attended the Border Cricket Academy where he played and captained the Border Cricket Team making his debut for Border in 2001.

His coaching career started at Western Province Preparatory School in 2004.  He then joined the Titans as a trainee Assistant Coach.  He went on to tour Sri Lanka with the SA team as Assistant Coach was appointed Assistant Coach to the National Academy in 2010.  His career at Titans continued to flourish as he was appointed Head Coach of the Provincial and U19 team.  In 2012 Malibongwe was appointed Assistant Coach for the franchise team – the Titans.

When an opportunity arose to join the Warriors in 2013 Malibongwe jumped at the opportunity to return to the Eastern Cape and was appointed Assistant Coach.

“It’s a great honour and privilege to be entrusted with such a responsibility.  I am looking forward to the challenge.  We have a young, dynamic squad and I hope that my passion and knowledge for the game will help them reach their potential as individuals and together as a squad we are always  competing at the highest level” said Maketa.
