The 41-year-old man accused of shooting dead his 23-year-old girlfriend and going on the run before being apprehended briefly appeared before the Butterworth Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of murder.

"He was not asked to plead," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"The case of the accused was postponed to Thursday 20 July 2017 for bail information.

"He remained in custody. The accused has been identified as Khaya Ngxobonwana."

Ngxobonwana was arrested by Kei Bridge police detectives on Friday.

"The murder was committed on the night of Tuesday, 27 June 2017, at Mahlubini Location, Manqulo Village near Kei Bridge, Butterworth," said Captain Manatha.

"The deceased was shot on her upper body. Her body was found by a passer-by during the morning of Wednesday, 28 June 2017."

He said that Kei Bridge police detectives worked around the clock to crack the case.

The 41-year-old suspect was traced and arrested at Mqanduli on Friday. The firearm that was allegedly used in the commission of murder was also recovered.

"This is another shocking and senseless case where a defenceless woman was murdered.

"It must be emphasized that the safety of women and children is a top priority for the Eastern Cape Police. The non-stop investigation of such cases is in line with our Back to Basics policing approach which requires efficient and responsive investigation of crime utilizing all resources at our disposal to ensure that offenders are brought to book to face the consequences of their ruthless deeds,” said Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Trevor Mey.

The deceased was identified as Zusiphe Mki.
