The Tsomo Regional Magistrate's Court on Monday convicted and sentenced a 36-year-old man to 25 years behind bars for raping his niece, aged 15-years-old, at Ndakana Location, Ncora Village, Ngqamakhwe, near Butterworth.

According to the police, the man met with the victim on the 3rd of June 2008, while she was coming from school.

“The accused, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, threatened the victim with a knife and he then raped her and instructed the victim not to tell her aunt - the wife of the accused,” said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

He added that, the victim finally broke the silence to some of her relatives and the Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) Unit later arrested the accused.

The accused is also serving 14-year sentence for another rape, which took place in May 2014 at Butterworth.

Butterworth Cluster Commander Brig Stanley Sibidla welcomed the sentence and praised Butterworth FCS Unit for properly investigating rape cases.
