Graaff-Reinet police have arrested a 26-year old man in connection with a major abalone bust outside Jansenville over the weekend.

Speaking in a statement, Warrant Officer Norman Holtzhausen said the man was taken into custody yesterday morning, after police found 57 bags of abalone on the back of his Ford Ranger at a routine police checkpoint. The bags, reportedly weighing 1 750 kg, had been transported from Port Elizabeth on-route to Gauteng.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Graaff-Reinet Magistrate’s Court later this week.
