A trainee accountant from Midrand, in Gauteng, is expected to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of making a hoax bomb threat at the city's airport.

According to Eastern Cape police, officers were called to the airport on Friday afternoon by staff from one of the low-cost airlines after the 26-year-old man, who was due to fly to Johannesburg, had allegedly claimed to have a bomb in his luggage while checking in.

The East London K-9 unit as well as the bomb disposal unit were then called out to the scene.

Police searched the luggage but found nothing. The 26-year-old is being charged under the Explosives Act.
