Mandela to be sentenced today for assault

JUNE 2, 2015

Former President Nelson Mandela's grandson and Chief of Mvezo, Zwelivelile Mandla Mandela, is expected to be sentenced in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court in Mthatha on Tuesday.

Mandela, who is also a Member of Parliament, was convicted of assaulting Mthatha teacher, Mlamli Ngudle, in 2013. The same court then acquitted on another charge of pointing a firearm.

It is believed Mandela attacked Ngudle along Sprigg Street, in Mthatha, after the teacher allegedly bumped a car belonging to one of Mandela's business associates.

According to Ngudle, Mandela slapped him across the face and kicked him while pointing him with a firearm.

However, Magistrate Noluthando Conjwa found that there had not been evidence supporting the allegation of the pointing of a firearm.
