Marathon held in Nelson Mandela's honour

DECEMBER 16, 2014

Hundreds of athletes on Tuesday participated in a marathon organized in honour of late former President Nelson Mandela from Qunu to the Walter Sisulu University’s Mthatha Campus.

This is the first Heroes Marathon that links Mandela's home in Qunu and the Walter Sisulu University, a year after Mandela passed on.

The marathon started a few metres away from Mandela's grave.

A heritage site

Eastern Cape Sport and Recreation MEC, Pemmy Majodina, said government will declare the Mandela grave site a world heritage site.

"That is where the grave site of Tata Nelson Mandela is, we are going to declare that site as the world heritage site. I would request all of us to give a moment of silence to remember Tata Mandela, the values that he stood for on this national Day of Reconciliation," she said.

Majodina told athletes that sport is a catalyst to bring together different people with different ideas together like Mandela did.

"We are saying there is no liberation, there is no freedom without us having started here in Qunu on our way to Walter Sisulu University."
