March new vehicle sales show substantial drop

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) has record a third consecutive drop in the sales of new vehicles, with the market also registering its biggest decline so far.

Aggregate total domestic sales for March dropped by 14.0% from 55 389 unit last year, to 47 631 examples this year. Individual segments were also down with new passenger vehicles sales falling 13.4% from 35 468 to 30 702, while light commercial vehicles registered a decline of 14.0% from last year’s 16 866 units, to 14 507.

Decreases were also posted in the sales of medium and heavy duty commercial vehicles, with the market contracting by 31.3% and 14.8% respectively. Export also posted a substantial decrease by falling 18.5% from 34 025 to 27 714.
