Masifunde to open renovated library at Walmer High School


Masifunde Learner Development is expected to officially unveil Walmer High School's Umthombo Wolwazi Library after it went through extensive renovations, on Friday afternoon. The school is located at the Corner of Heugh Road and 9th Avenue in Walmer, Port Elizabeth.

Umthombo Wolwazi (Xhosa for Fountain of Knowledge) Library was established in 2011 by exchange students from the United States of America.

Since 2013 it is run by Masifunde Learner Development. The school library is a bright und welcoming space that caters for around 1400 learners a week, providing up to date study material and access to research facilities.

"After weeks of hard work and with great support from pupils, team members and volunteers from all over Port Elizabeth Masifunde has finalised the reno-vations of Walmer High School library and a total of ten class rooms, ensuring that learners have access to a safe and conducive study space which equips them with a variety of reading material, study guides, laptops and internet access," said Jonas Schumacher for Masifunde.

Masifunde provides educational support in a holistic and sustainable manner to 200 motivated learners from impoverished communities.

"The renovation, which was very generously funded by the German Consulate General, Cape Town, included the painting of walls, ceiling and furniture, as well as replacement of floor and installation of burglar bars of ten class rooms in total, the renovation of lavatories for learners as well as the extension of the library in order to accommodate a bigger number of pupils," said Schumacher.

The launch will be hosted by the library prefects and marks the highlight of literacy week.

The aim to promote reading amongst the youth, the library staff and prefects are offering a number of fun, interactive events to Walmer High School pupils throughout the week, such as a Sophia Town themed disco, a readathon, a reading flash mob and a Trivia Afternoon.
