May new vehicle sales fall as exports continues up


The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) has recorded a third consecutive month of sales decline with exports continuing to gain momentum.

Aggregate sales for May came to 47 868 units, a 3.2% drop over the 49 449 vehicles sold during the same time last year. Individual segment were however mixed with the sales of passenger vehicles falling 5.4% from last year’s 32 974 units to 31 201, while light commercial vehicles went up 2.2% from 13 873 to 14 182.

In comparison, the market for medium and heavy duty commercial vehicles continued to drop at a rate of 4.0% and 4.4% respectively. Exports continued to shine with a massive 114.2% increase from last year’s 15 595 to 33 411 this year.
