Mayoral Gala 2015 – Who benefits from the funding generated?

George Municipality is committed to support and uplift the George community in any possible way. The plight of the poor, the improvement of social standards and the promotion and unlocking of opportunities for all George residents, are some of the key priorities of the George City Council under the leadership of the Executive Mayor, Charles Standers.

In terms of the Municipal Finance Management Act, Act 56 of 2003 an Executive Mayor is prohibited from utilising ratepayers’ money to establish a discretionary fund. The afore-mentioned Act does however make provision for a relief fund, which the Executive Mayor may establish by raising funds from the private sector.

There are stringent guidelines and regulations and money may only be withdrawn from such a fund with the oversight of the Accounting Officer.

The primary aim of the Mayoral Gala evening will once again be to raise funds towards the George Municipality Charitable and Relief Fund. George Municipality has developed a strong partnership with the private sector to ensure success in mutual objectives and endeavours.

The support and involvement of the private sector is vital in local authority matters to facilitate cooperative and transparent governance.

The prestigious 2013 Mayoral Gala surpassed all expectations and brought in the much needed funding to support various individuals and organisations.

A total amount of R107,000 from the fund was used to assist 62 worthy groups or individuals to the value of between R500 and R5,000 each.  Deserving teams and individual youths were assisted in order to be able to attend regional and national sports championships in hockey, netball, rugby, soccer, dance, chess, swimming, kickboxing, drum majorettes, national disabled cycling and even an international wheel chair championship.

The fund also assisted projects by community service organisations such as the ACVV, Community Reflections Theatre Movement, Sports Against Crime, Carpe Diem School, Up with Down's School and even assisted the South Cape Children’s Choir to travel to Latvia and return home as world champions.

On the evening of Saturday, 28 November 2015 the exclusive Mayoral Gala 2015 will take place at Fancourt Hotel. Guests will be transported into the exciting and fast-paced world of James Bond. An evening filled with style and grandeur, with food, wine and entertainment of the highest standard.

Unique and fashionable gifts will once again be a part of the package, serving as a token of appreciation for contributing and a reminder of a night never to forget!

The funds generated by the Gala will go towards the George Municipal Charitable and Relief Fund. The Executive Mayor and the Municipal Manager hereby wish to invite sponsorship and or ticket sales for this worthy fundraising event.
