Mazda goes big with new 2
Having been on something of a revival since splitting from long time stablemate Ford, Mazda has introduced its fourth generation, the first two were never available locally, 2 supermini to South Africa, with sales set to officially commence next month.
Fresh from being voted 2014-2015 Car of the Year in its home market last year, the new 2 replaces its immensely popular predecessor and will be available, for the first time locally, with a turbodiesel engine and an automatic gearbox.
Comprising of four models, the base Active, Dynamic and Individual makes use of a new 1.5-litre petrol engine, now incorporating the SKYACTIVE-G technology, that produce 82 kW and 145 N.m of torque. A six-speed manual gearbox replaces the previous five speeder with a similar ratio automatic available as an option on the latter two models.
Completing the range, the new Hazumi spec is solely available with the marque’s brand new SKYACTIVE-D 1.5-litre turbodiesel, which produces 77 kW and 250 N.m of torque, and is mated exclusively with the auto box. Mazda claims a combined fuel consumption figure of a miserly low 4.4 L/100 km.
As with its predecessor, standard spec on the new 2 is comprehensive with the Active featuring a four-speaker audio system with USB/Aux input, push-button start, height adjustable driver’s seat, trip computer, steering wheel mounted audio controls, 15-inch steel wheels, ABS with EBD, EBA and dual front airbags.
Next up, the Dynamic adds a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Internet radio integration for Pandora, Sticher and Aha, Bluetooth, six-speaker audio system, leather wrapped steering wheel, gearknob and handbrake lever, electrically folding mirrors and 15-inch alloy wheels.
Capping off the petrol range, the Individual features 16-inch alloys, chrome tipped exhaust, body coloured grille, red/black stitching on the dashboard, seats and armrests, and auto on/off headlights.
Ending the new Mazda2 range, the Hazumi adds half-leather seats, climate control, Dynamic Stability Control and Satellite Navigation.
No information on maintenance plans or after sales service has yet been provided.
