MEC Sihlwayi to handover furniture to victim's family in Hankey

As part of Women’s month celebrations, the Eastern Cape MEC of Social Development, Nancy Sihlwayi, will on Thursday, handover furniture to a family that was a victim of gender based violence in Hankey, in the Kouga Local Municipality.

The MEC is also expected to address the community of Hankey on issues of Gender-Based Violence at Vusumzi Landu Community Hall at 11:00.

On the 3rd of August last year, Claudia Antonie and her nephew were gang-raped by a group of youth, who then after, set their house alight, resulting in the death of the mother and her nephew.

As a result three children of the deceased mother were left without a home.

The visit is part of the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development’s work of embracing and promoting the rights of vulnerable women and their children, with a special focus to victims of gender based violence.

Officials from the department and a project funded  by the department, On Eagles’ Wings, which is based in Jeffrey Bay, in the same municipality, have also pledged to donate bricks, windows and roof to rebuild the house for the children of the slain mother.

On the day, the MEC will also hand over food parcels to 30 families that are in distress.
