Medium chance of evening load shedding: Eskom

JULY 27, 2015

Power utility, Eskom says the load shedding prognosis for today is low for the morning and medium for the evening. The announcement follows two days of Stage 2 load shedding over the weekend.

Eskom said on Sunday morning that it was implementing stage 2 load shedding from 08:00 to 22:00 due to the power system being under pressure.

"[This is]... because of a shortage of generating capacity as some of our power stations’ units are currently on maintenance. We will also use the day to build up reserves for the week ahead," it said in a statement.

"Eskom would like to assure customers that load shedding is implemented as a necessary measure to protect the power system and to ensure that maintenance is carried out in order to guarantee that our supply of electricity can be maintained in the long term."

Eskom said on Thursday that unit 2 of the Koeberg nuclear power plant outside Cape Town will be shut down for three months from the end of August as part of routine refuelling and maintenance.

In February, unit 1 of the plant was shut down for a similar period, resulting in the loss of half the output at the 1800 megawatt nuclear power plant.
