Medupi ready by June - Eskom

Eskom has announced that the first unit of its much troubled Medupi Power Station, outside Lephalale in Limpopo, is set to be connected to the national grid by June this year.

Speaking in an interview with the SABC, Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe, said that the unit will undergo various test throughout the next few months in order for it to be in perfect working order.

“Unit six will start producing power around June this year. Obviously, the first phase will be the synchronisation test phase,” he told the broadcaster.

“Essentially, this means that we will gradually connect the power station to the grid. Once connected, it will help a great deal because South Africa requires a lot of power. Demand for power is growing all the time and once Medupi’s fully operational we will have a lot more capacity than we have now”.
