BY JESICA SLABBERT - AUGUST 22, 2016

A memorial service of the late Reverend Makhenkesi Stofile was held on Monday at the Christian Centre at Abbotsford, in East London.

The former Eastern Cape Premier and Minister of Sports and recreation passed away last week Monday at his home in Alice.

In attendance of his memorial service was the Deputy Minister of Finance, Mcebisi Jonas; Chief Ngangomhlaba Matanzima, representing House of Traditional Leaders; and Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle, who gave the keynote address.

“The loss is not just the loss of the family; he is the loss to mankind as a whole. In the ranks of governance he was very passionate about education, to him just being an educationist is what he sought to infuse in the governance of this province,” said Masualle.

Speaking at the same event, Deputy Minister Jonas, said that “Stofile believed in non-racialism and was a true democrat, he believed in critique and that no individual is above scrutiny. And most importantly he believed that the masses cannot be passengers in our programme of social transformation.”

His funeral which will be held in Alice on Thursday, 25 August 2016 has been declared a Special Official Funeral by President Jacob Zuma.

President Zuma is expected to do the eulogy at the funeral.
