JANUARY 22, 2015

The metro has made provision for more than 100 contingent liabilities in the notes to its financial statements for the 2013/14 financial year.

These are ongoing matters and the municipality “is unable to determine the exact timing and outcome.

The claims against the municipality range from people falling into an open trench an uncovered drain to damage of property “as a result of an electrical surge” to motor vehicle accidents caused by a municipal vehicle to damage as a result of an alleged sewer spillage, assault and labour matters.

Among the claims is one that arises from a municipal vehicle bought at an auction which did not have an engine number, with the engine later being confiscated by Police.

There are also claims for damages as a result of damages caused to a motor vehicle by a pothole and injuries resulting from the collapse of a jungle gym on a municipal playground.
