MIDWEEK FAMILY TIME: Delicious Wednesday night carvery buffet at Mike’s Kitchen

Unforgettable, is the word that comes to mind when I think about a dinner outing that I recently had with my family at Mike’s Kitchen. That evening, the restaurant was hosting one of their weekly carvery buffet nights which can be enjoyed on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday evenings and Sundays for lunch.

On arrival, we found the place already abuzz with patrons - apparently Mike’s Kitchen had also been the choice for several other families that evening. We chose our usual table – my family eats out at Mike’s every so often, and it happened to be near the carvery - a bonus!

Comfortably seated, one of their friendly waitrons promptly came and took our drinks order. Before long, we made our way up for starters. There was a variety of mouth-watering salads to choose from including pickled onions, beetroot, curried noodle, coleslaw, green, three bean, feta, olives and curried carrot salads, to name but a few.

I opted to try their curried noodle, potato and coleslaw salads which I found flavoursome. About 15 minutes later, we made our way up for our mains.

Again, we were spoilt for choice. On offer were three freshly-cooked carvery roasts; pork, beef and lamb. Each meat had been done to absolute perfection. There was also an accompaniment of rice, beef curry, Chicken-ala-King, creamed spinach, pumpkin, roast potatoes and gravy to choose from.

Any doubt as to Mike’s Kitchen’s ability to cater for large groups were dispelled by my family’s approving mmm’s as we tucked in. My pork was so juicy, crispy and bursting with flavour!

Filled-up, we finished our meals off with the most delectable desserts we have had for a long time. While I chose my favourite, the cheese cake, my fiancé and his mother selected an Amarula dream, which is phyllo pastry filled with chocolate and deep-fried. Everyone else ordered the malva pudding with ice-cream.

You will not believe that this whole meal, excluding drinks and dessert cost only R75 per head! Nobody can host people at their home for that littlenowadays.

Clearly Mike’s Kitchen’s family dining formula still works well. We enjoyed on of the best family meals we have had in a very long time. The ease of finding the place; the size of its venue, the friendly atmosphere, professional service and the availability of ample parking, all make the restaurant the ideal place for family outings.
