Military veterans to get houses soon

SEPTEMBER 30, 2015

Former freedom fighters in the Chris Hani District will soon have their own houses, thanks to the launch of a multi-million rand housing development project.

The Department of Human Settlements, in collaboration with the Department of Defence and Military Veterans, will on Tuesday launch the R43.9 million housing project for the construction of 200 houses, which is currently underway.

Each house will feature two bedrooms, kitchen with a stove, a car port, bathroom, plastering, ceiling installation, electricity and fencing.

Both the national Departments of Human Settlements and Military Veterans have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

According to the MoU, the Department of Military Veterans has agreed to provide top up funding that will cover the additional features to all the homes that will be provided for military veterans.

The project is part of 5 854 houses to be built for military veterans across the country by the end of the Mid Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF). In the Eastern Cape, three projects will be implemented this financial year at OR Tambo, Nelson Mandela Metro and Chris Hani District.

A total of 104 houses will be built for military veterans this financial year.

One of the qualifying criteria is for the military veteran to belong to a registered association within the database of the Department of Military Veterans.

The Military Veterans Housing Programme is aimed at assisting and supporting military veterans and their dependents.
