Minister Motshekga checks on EC schools

MARCH 10, 2016

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has wrapped up her visit to the Eastern Cape, where she met with stakeholders in the school system.

Her visit was in line with her responsibility to support provinces that recorded a high percentage drop in the 2015 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results.

The Minister met with the Provincial Education Department's MEC, senior management, district directors and principals. Progress was reported in a number of areas, including reducing education districts from 23 to 12 to make the districts more efficient, reducing the number of unviable small schools.

A number of challenges were identified, including the finalisation of Learning and Teaching Support Material (LTSM) delivery, underspending on the school infrastructure budget and general challenges around the areas of supply chain management, human resources and financial management.

The department used these meetings to share information with district directors and principals on the resolutions of the National Education Lekgotla held on 21 - 22 January 2016, in Centurion.

The Minister and the MEC agreed to form a joint team to work together to address the identified challenges as a matter of urgency. The team would prioritise ensuring that the basics are addressed to enable the department to focus on its core business of teaching and learning.
