Minister tells congress that opposition parties are “dead”

Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande, has reportedly described opposition parties "as good for nothing" and that they "are dead".

According to an article by CityPress, the Minister made the statement while addressing a congress, hosted by the South African Democratic Teacher’s Union (Sadtu), in Boksburg yesterday. He also added that anyone who dares to attack the South African Communist Party (SACP) "will not survive".

"All those who turn against the SACP are now out in the cold. It started with the Pan African Congress in the 60s. Look at the IFP [Inkatha Freedom Party], where is it? It is going underground, dead almost. Cope [Congress of the People], where are they, dead".

The Minister also took a swipe at Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), describing them as a “rightwing fascist organisation that is going nowhere”.

"The EFF has not brought any quality debate in Parliament. All they know is hooliganism. They have brought anarchy. When it comes to debate, they have nothing to offer.

"They threatened to walk away from Parliament, let them go for good, we will not miss them." The party has not yet responded to the comments.

He also described the Democratic Alliance as being in a poor state, and that he pities the party’s voters who are "now led by the EFF in Parliament".

Lashing out at Sadtu, the minister said, "It is being torn apart and is regarded as a union which is not concerned with the education of the African child. Don’t be defensive when we criticise you. Sadtu is a great and revolutionary union and as the SACP we are proud to be associated with Sadtu".

Speaking at the same event earlier, Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, described the organisation as a "beacon of hope" and "a shining example of what happens when revolutionaries refuse to accept the status quo but choose to fight for a cause".
