Minister wants fakers “named and shamed”

Higher Education Minister, and South African Communist Party (SACP) General Secretary, Blade Nzimande, has said that people thinking of submitting fake qualifications must be named and shamed.

According to Eyewitness News, Nzimande made the comment at a press briefing ahead of his budget speech in Parliament, after approaching the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) for advice on the qualifications of state workers.

“I've asked the Saqa to advise me on how we deal with this scourge of faked qualifications or people who claim qualifications they do not have and part of the mandate I have given them is the possibility of establishing a name and shame register,” Nzimande said.

He also added that an audit, regarding the academic qualifications of state employees, would be submitted before Cabinet for approval, and that the names of teachers, found guilty of sexual misconduct, had already been put on the list.

“One of the most precious things any country can have is the credibility of its qualifications and higher education system because if we don't it affects everybody,” he said.
