Minister working on bringing stability to the Post Office

NOVEMBER 4, 2014

Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services, Siyabonga Cwele, is working on numerous interventions to bring stability to the South African Post Office (Sapo).

“It will certainly be ideal if the workers who have embarked on the current violent, unprotected and illegal industrial action stop the intimidation and violence,” department spokesperson Siya Qoza told SAnews on Tuesday.

Hundreds of Post Office employees have been on strike for about four months, demanding better wages.

The strike has affected operations as well as caused the closure of post offices across the country as a result of the intimidation and violence by striking employees.

Minister Cwele has appealed to workers to return to work while their issues were being addressed through the proper labour structures, Qoza said.

He was also looking at ways in which he could strengthen the leadership at the Post Office.

“A stable Post Office will enable the delivery of mail to resume and for all the stakeholders to finalise the turnaround strategy for the company,” Qoza said. –
