Ministers mislead Parliament on Nkandla - FF+

The Freedom Front Plus (FF+) has asked Public Protector Thuli Madonsela to investigate Police Minister Nathi Nhleko and Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi, for allegedly misleading Parliament’s ethics committee on the upgrades at President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla homestead.

In a statement, FF+ leader Pieter Mulder said Zuma’s surprise announcement on Tuesday that he would pay back some of the money as determined by auditor-general Kimi Makwetu and Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, contradicts the findings of Nhleko, who cleared him of being held accountable for the additions of an amphitheatre, cattle kraal, chicken run and swimming pool.

“The proposed settlement is baffling as it remains unclear as to what the President wants to pay for now. This proves that both Ministers mislead Parliament with the release of their findings,” Mulder said.

“As both are Ministers are also members of Parliament, we would approach Parliament’s ethics committee to determine their involvement in this matter”.

Last year, Nhleko’s report stated that Zuma could not be expected to pay back a portion of the R246-million as recommend in Madonsela’s Secure in Comfort report, as he never asked for the additions.
