More than 170 arrested in Uitenhage during weekend crime prevention operations

Uitenhage police arrested more than 171 suspects, through high density operations that were conducted over the past weekend.  

"The suspects were arrested on charges relating to robbery, attempted murder, housebreaking and theft, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, theft, possession of suspected stolen goods, etc," said police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart.

"Eleven arrests were made for driving under the influence of liquor.  A total of 38 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R19 000. 

"31 people were arrested and detained after illegal drugs were found in their possession.  A total of 60 fines were issued for other liquor related crimes."

She said that police in the Uitenhage Cluster will continue to combat crime effectively in the Uitenhage Cluster. 

"The South African Police Service appeal to the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects, the tracing of illegal firearms and the recovery of stolen property," Captain Swart added. 

"Let us share information and support each other in the fight against crime."
