Motorists urged to avoid Jansenville due to violent protests

MAY 31, 2016

Members of the Jansenville SAPS are reportedly assisting desperate motorists through the town via an unspecified route after workers at the Ikwezi Local Municipality blocked off the R75 with stones and a bulldozer and littered the town in what is believed to be a wage protest.

The R75 connects Port Elizabeth and Graaff-Reinet and drivers have been cautioned to find alternative routes.

Apparently, the workers at the municipality, which is to be amalgamated with the neighbouring Baviaans and Camdeboo Local Municipalities, embarked on the protest on Tuesday morning after once again not receiving their salaries.

The detour through the river has also been blocked, so motorists travelling between Graaff-Reinet and Port Elizabeth now have to go via Pearston and Somerset East - an extra 160km.
