MARCH 22, 2016

Five suspects, aged between 25 and 30, appeared briefly in the Mthatha Magistrates Court on Tuesday, on charges of murder following the attack and murder of 23 year-old Wandile Makheba.

The  five suspects, Siphokuhle Manqindi (32), Mandisile Maqungu (37), Vusumzi Maqungu (33), Gugulethu Mnukwa (48) and Pumelele Dlomo (51) were remanded in custody by the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court to 31 March 2016.

"It is alleged that the deceased was murdered by a group of community members because he was accused of carjacking on the 16 March in Zimbane Valley, Mthatha," said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dineo Koena.

"Within hours of the incident being reported to the police, one suspect was arrested at Zimbane Valley. Police investigations led to the arrest of the other four on the 18 March - again at Zimbane Valley."

Mthatha Cluster Commander, Major General Sizakhele Dyantyi condemned the criminal behavior of the community of Zimbane Valley, near Mthatha.

“A stern warning is issued to members of the community, not to take the law into their own hands. The SAPS will not tolerate this behavior, because avenge seekers become criminals themselves, and SAPS will have no option, but to arrest them for their unlawful actions.

"It is very critical that the community members work with the SAPS and report criminals and criminal activities irrespective of the nature of the incident. We urge the community members to work together with the police by reporting crime and criminal activities”, said Major General Sizakhele Dyantyi earlier today.
