Mthatha police re-arrest prison escapee while en-route to commit robbery

Escaped awaiting-trial prisoner, Thando Myendeki, was re-arrested on Wednesday by Mthatha police in Ngcobo, almost two months after his dramatic escape from police custody with seven other criminals on December 8, 2015. Apparently, he was on his way to commit a robbery when the police re-apprehended him.

Myendeki's re-arrest comes after Mthatha police received a tip-off from members of the public.

He was reported to the police as moving toward the town in a car and he was then followed and re-captured, Warrant Officer, Dineo Koena, told RNews.

During his re-arrest, police found in his possession an illegal R5 firearm with 33 rounds of ammunition.

When Myendeki escaped from custody with the other criminals, they had just made a routine appearance at the Mthatha High Court for murder charges but in different cases.

Five of the escapees were immediately re-arrested just approximately half an hour after they had escaped, while Myendeki managed to avoid re-capture.

Only two escapees left, Samuel Rwentsana and Dumisana Lwana, are still at large.
