Mthatha police thwart robbery


Mthatha police have arrested six suspects in connection with an attempted robbery and on suspicion of committing a similar crime last week.

Speaking in a statement, police spokesperson Lt Col Mzukisi Fatyela said that the suspects, aged 25-31 were pulled over on the R61 heading from Mthatha to Engcobo yesterday afternoon, after authorities had received information that they were planning the crime.

Fatyela said that a closer inspection of the men’s Volkswagen Polo turned-up a nine millimeter parabellum with 13 rounds ammunition, a nine millimeter Norinco with seven rounds and a 7.654 with six rounds. The car and weapons were confiscated and latter send for ballistics test to determine if they had been used in previous crimes.

The suspects, who have reported links to similar crime committed on Friday, are expected to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court tomorrow on charges of possessing of illegal firearm and ammunition.
