Mtimkulu needs to be suspended - DA

BY CHARL BOSCH - JULY 13, 2015

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called-on Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) Head of Engineering, Daniel Mtimkulu, to provide proof that he obtained a degree from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and a subsequent PhD from an unnamed university in Germany as claimed on his CV.

Last week, Afrikaans newspaper Beeld found that Mtimkulu, who had been involved with the designing of the controversial R600-million Afro 4000 diesel locomotives, had his application as a member of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) revoked in 2006, and that no evidence could be found of him having ever registered or graduated from Wits as claimed.

“It is vitally important for the effective running of our transport infrastructure, and in this case of our railroads, that those appointed in the public service have the requisite qualifications and expertise so that they are equipped to do the best job possible,” DA Shadow Minister for Transport, Manny de Freitas, said in a statement.

“It is an easy thing to produce the proof of his qualifications, if he does in fact have them. Should he fail to do so, Mr Mtimkulu must be immediately suspended pending a full Parliamentary Inquiry”.

de Freitas also stated that party would submit an application to Transport Committee Chairperson, Dikeledi Magadzi, for Mtimkulu to appear before the committee and present proof of his qualifications.
