Murder accused jailed for 28 years after 2013 shooting


The Port Elizabeth Regional Court has sentenced a 24-year old man to an affective 28 years behind bars for the murder of a 35-year old Gelvandale man in December 2013.

In a statement, police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said Serano Damons approached the man and two of his friends in Deverill Road on December first, after their vehicle had become bogged down. He then started hurling insults and threats at them before walking away, only to return minutes later with a firearm.

Naidu said Damons then started shooting at the men with the victim later dying in hospital after being shot in the stomach. She said Damons was arrested a month later while walking with his in girlfriend in New Brighton, and has remained in custody ever since.

He was found guilty of attempted murder, murder and the illegal possession of ammunition as well as a firearm.
