Nature and Adventure combined: From the comfort of At the Woods Guest House

BY AMBER HARINGTON - MARCH 17, 2015

Being a person who loves forests, mountains and the ocean, I often holiday along the Garden Route. On many occasions, I have stopped at the Storms River petrol station before taking a walk along the Paul Sauer bridge and peering over its edge to see the impressive gorge below. This was normally the sum total of my Tsitsikamma experience until a recent visit to At the Woods.

At the Woods Guest House is situated in the Storms River Village, a sun dappled, quaint little town located a few hundred meters from the N2, that I had bypassed on all my previous trips, totally unaware of the town’s existence.

The guest house, from its gravelled drive to its neatly decorated reception area is most welcoming.  The mixture of warm colours, bamboo mats, pottery and beaded ornaments add a homely feel and the owners, Marco and Bev Coetzee, are natural born hosts.

After checking in, my boyfriend and I were shown our room which was spotlessly clean and equipped with an en-suite bathroom, television with selected DSTV channels, mini-bar, tea/coffee making station, ceiling fan, heater, Wi-Fi and a private deck area.  The guest house has eight rooms in total with a choice of family, twin or double rooms.

At the Woods is located within walking distance of the forest and is a perfect base for any outdoor lover.  There is plenty to do in the area and some of the biggest names in adventure tourism are located in or near the village.  Returning to the guest house at the end of an adrenalin filled day is wonderful as the veranda and pool is a perfect spot to regain ones breath and plan your next day of fun.

Being a small village, we could walk to dinner at one of the local restaurants. After our evening stroll we collapsed into our beds - I can definitely attest to the comfort of the beds as after a deep sleep we woke feeling refreshed.  Breakfast was served on the deck which has the most amazing view of the Tsitsikamma Mountains.  This, together with friendly service and the combination of fruit salads, various cereals, toast, croissants, egg, bacon, mushrooms and tomato proved to be the perfect start to our day of adventure.

Storms River Village and At the Woods in particular, are now one of my favourite destinations and I will be returning soon.
