Nelson Mandela Bay, Africa's Second Most Homicidal City: Report

BY TAI CHISHAKWE - NOVEMBER 17, 2014

According to a new raking compiled by Mexico's Citizens' Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice, Nelson Mandela Bay South Africa is the 41st most violent city in the world and is the second most violent city in Africa – second only to Cape Town which is the most violent in Africa.

Surprisingly, Johannesburg is not on the list and Durban, ranked 48th overall with 32.42 homicides per 100 000 residents, in third place. Johannesburg, once touted as the murder capital of the world, did not make the list – it has a murder rate of 26 per 100 000 people.

The report says that an average of 35.76 homicides per 100 000 residents.

Latin America is, by far, the most violent region on the planet while the US is the only developed country with multiple cities in the top 50. Drug trafficking, gang wars, political instability, corruption, and poverty were blamed for the high murder rate there.

No European or Asian city made the list.
