SEPTEMBER 15, 2014

Nelson Mandela Bay has 86 172 registered indigent households, the third highest number after eThekwini (687 000), Cape Town (251 381) and Johannesburg (130 000).

Revealing the figures in reply to a written question in the National Assembly, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Pravin Gordhan said that Nelson Mandela Bay received a total allocation of R642.2 million to help it provide free basic water, energy, sanitation and waste removal services to indigent/poor households.

Of this, he said, just over R204 million was for water; R166.6 million for sanitation; R139.6 million for refuse removal and just less than R132 million for electricity.

Gordhan said that the National Indigent Policy Framework allowed each municipality to decide “how it wants to target indigent households and what targeting methods were best suited to it”. -MetroMinutes
