Nelson Mandela Bay Housing Accreditation Issue To Be Resolved

BY SUPPLIED - AUGUST 22, 2014

Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu says she intends to “resolve the thorny contestation between local and provincial spheres” over accreditation within the next 100 days.

Nelson Mandela Bay is seeking Level 2 Accreditation in terms of which it will assume responsibility of all matters pertaining to housing in the metro and will receive funding directly from National Treasury rather than having to apply to the provincial department for an allocation.

Sisulu says a “commonality of under-standing” is required “so that we are able to proceed, because the level of uncertainty that exists in this regard is very onerous on municipalities”.

The metro has applied for Level 3 Accreditation, which must be agreed to by Eastern Cape Human Settlements MEC Helen Sauls-August.

In her Policy Speech last month, the MEC gave a commitment to prepare Nelson Mandela Bay for Level 3 assignment “before the end of the financial year”. - MetroMinutes.
