Nelson Mandela Bay Metro team to present Audit progress report to Bhisho

A delegation from Nelson Mandela Bay is scheduled to meet Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Fikile Xasa in East London on Tuesday to report on progress made with the municipality’s audit turnaround plan.

Mayor Ben Fihla was supposed to lead the delegation but he has yet to re-turn from Jacksonville, Florida, where he delivered the keynote address at a banquet that was held to pay tribute to former President Nelson Mandela.

Xasa said in his Policy Speech in the Bhisho Legislature last month that the Auditor General had identified “low levels of accountability” as one reason for the slow pace of improvement in audit outcomes.

He said he had requested mayors to submit audit improvement plans to turn around the situation, adding that he would convene quarterly sessions at which mayors would be required to submit progress reports.

Xasa said he believed this would “persuade” the leadership of municipalities “to treat this matter with the urgency it deserves,” adding that he also believed “we shall be able to receive early warning on those municipalities that are either unable or un-willing to address this matter”.

NMB will not be the first to present tomorrow as that is revered for municipalities that received disclaimers or adverse audit opinions. - MetroMinutes.
