Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality hosting several events for Human Rights Month

MARCH 3, 2016

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says it will host a number of programmes and events in celebration of human rights this month and in remembrance of the sacrifices made for us to have such rights.

"In line with the 2016 Human Rights Day, which will concentrate on the fight against racism, the NMBM, working with the Uitenhage Massacre Foundation and other community-based stakeholders, will follow suit by aligning our celebrations with the national theme," the municipality said.

"The events and programmes will be a build-up to the main event of 21 March, which will be held at the Jabavu Stadium, where thousands of Nelson Mandela Bay residents will attend."

Human Rights Month kicks off with a 30 km run (Athletics South Africa sanctioned and Nelson Mandela Bay supported), which will be held at the Rosedale Stadium on March 5, 2016.

"The run has been structured to be family orientated: almost all ages will be allowed to participate at different levels.  The core intention is to use sport, and athletics in particular, as a rallying  and mobilising tool in the celebration of human rights and the fight against racism. It will also encourage society to adopt a healthy lifestyle in order to be able to enjoy the supreme right, namely the right to life," the municipality adds.
